Any of you have experience owning a 4th gen Odyssey (2011-2017)?

The lease on our Pacifica is up next year and I’m thinking about it’s replacement. We want to pay cash for the next family car because we are saving for a house and don’t want the payment to mess up our debt/income ratio.

My main concern with the Odyssey is the transmission. Is the 6-speed auto in the 2014+ models reliable? From what I read they are OK as long as you drain and fill every 10k miles. Does that seem reasonable? Personally, I’d rather buy a Durango R/T with the ZF 8HP70 and call it a day.

I’m also looking at the Toyota Sienna, Dodge Durango R/T, mayyyybe the 3rd gen Kia Sedona if those hold up OK. Spending under $30k.

Yes, the trannies on these are allegedly reliable compared to prior ones. I still change ours twice (progressively) every 30k miles using the OE tranny fluid. Every 10k sounds ridiculous, though. 30k is the most aggressive I’ve ever gotten, and many people just let it go 60-100k.

By the way, all three of your alternatives are better cars, IMO.

I’ve suspected this for a long time. The Sedona looks and drives great, the Sienna is bland and looks stupid, but the Durango is what I really want if I can get over the ease-of-use compromises compared to a minvan. We’ll see what the budget is when it’s time for the switch.

Our hasn’t had any issues at all. Of course we’ve only had it 6 months. But still. From what I researched prior to purchasing ours, the transmission issues are overhyped and typically found in the older models (like early 2000's). Shouldn’t have any issues with a 4th gen.

We’re in the same boat — Durango was my top choice among about 15 vans and crossover/SUVs. I found it to be the best combo of carlike manners, but with trucklike capabilities.

The van won in the end because frankly, it has about twice the usable space as the Durango, plus better maneuvering, lower load height, etc.

The redesigned Sedona was not yet released when we bought (late 2014), but I’d give it a hard look. I had a rental and was impressed. The Pacifica also came out later and I haven’t heard much bad about it.

A little light reading about the Odyssey that I put together shortly after purchase. It’s a little on the harsh side, but that was partly a subconscious response to the mass media loving it so much:

Funny how much your story follows mine: love of the Dodge Magnum, keen on the Durango, and feelings on the 4th gen Odyssey. I don’t know why they sell so well. Maybe the newest model is better, but the 4th gen seemed like they phoned it in. We’ve loved our Pacifica - it drove better than all the competition - but the transmission... Anyway, thanks for the follow-up.

See, a lot of what I read in the odyclub forum was about the transmission and how much care it needs. Maybe I’m overreacting, but with such a long history of glass transmissions (one experienced personally in a 2nd gen, and one in by BIL’s 3rd gen) I think I’ll pass on the Odyssey altogether.

I have a 2014 odyssey that we purchased with 48k miles off lease. It had a shutter at low speeds from the transmission mainly from 2000 to 3500 rpm when accelerating from a stop. I took it to the dealership and the advisor went for a ride with me and felt it too. Turns out that some of them have issues with the trans fluid burning up and the fix was a Honda Technical Service Bulletin. They flushed the transmission about 11 times at the shop S per the TSB, Honda extended the warranty for the powertrain, and I haven’t had any issues since. 17,000 additional miles and no issues.

I should clarify. The flushes were all done same day. And the shutter was caused by the torque converter slipping due to the burned up fluid.

How has the fit and finish of the rest of the car been?

I have a 2004 Oddessy that had transmission replaced @ 75000 & 130000. It just blew out again @ 190000. While this is an earlier model, it seems to me Honda has a problem with reliable transmissions.

And the 2018 has a new 10 speed of their own design. Let’s see if that one breaks the cycle.

You know, the excursion looks great on paper, especial with the diesel (and boy can they scoot with a good tune) but they are so huge and rough riding. My friend has had two of them, both with the 6.0 diesel. His son blew up the first one and he bulletproofed the second. Maybe if FCA made a three row Dodge something with a Cummins I’d be interested...

Sienna or Sedona. If only because they’re not ugly.

Don’t forget the Transit Connect LWB. Even used Transits can be well-equipped.

My cousin has a 2nd gen that’s been beaten and abused and poorly maintained, but has had 0 issues. I’m all for regular care, but I dont think its gonna grenade if you dont do crazy over-preventative maintenance either.
